Originally built as production offices for the motion picture industry, our client, a commercial and residential contractor, wanted to restore and update this building for his needs. Our approach was to open up as much of the original architecture as possible and provide a showcase, through both materials and finishes, of clients’ construction skills and attention to detail.
Finely detailed Finnish plywood sheathes low office partitions beneath a skylight in the main space. The conference room and offices are defined by imaginative door and window openings and painted wood paneling. The curvilinear paneling at the front entrance forms the lobby and helps conceal a curved hidden door to the new conference room. Finally, natural light floods the interior during business hours to energize the work setting while reducing the need for artificial lighting, thus lessening the building’s impact on the natural environment.
