Fabulous Pools in Architecture Design Projects

Water, water everywhere! With summer so close, people across the country are dreaming of swimming pools and water recreation and water is so integral to our designs we consider it part of our DNA. With this in mind, we are looking back at some of our favorite water features and pools in architecture design projects in California.

Bluejay

This iconic picture of the pool in our Bluejay project (above left) has been found across the internet because it is just so beautiful. And no wonder considering the drama we created with its placement: Someone can step from the living area, through a sliding glass wall, and into the dramatic knife-edge pool.

A knife-edge swimming pool features a mirror-like effect by having the water level flush with the pool deck. The pool wall is sharply angled away from the water’s edge, creating a knife-edge appearance and eliminating the need for visible coping. Typically there is a gap 0.25 to 1 inch wide between the pool’s edge and the decking, into which water flows. Knife-edge pools can serve as vanishing pools, also known as zero edge or infinity edge pools, which create the illusion that the water extends seamlessly into the horizon, providing a dramatic visual effect.

The Bluejay pool is lit with color-changing LED’s and acts as a kinetic work of art connecting earth and sky as well as inside and outside.

The pool at the “Flying Wing House” as it is also called, is another gorgeous water feature. To increase the size of the yard, we added retaining walls surrounding a spectacular curved pool, that was placed on an axis with the house to emphasize the spectacular views. This pool is a zero edge pool, which means the edge is absolutely level to the edge of the pool to create a mirror effect.

The baja shelf that the chaise lounges rest in is a feature we often incorporate to float furniture in. The depth of the water is about 6 inches, so this feature is also great for families with young children.

Dean shared, “I often refer to this shelf as the “architect’s pool. People can take off their socks and shoes and walk in with a glass of wine. It’s really non-committal-you don’t have to commit to anything!”

Shahinian

The pool on this expansive estate has the most amazing view! From here, you could feel like you can see the whole world into infinity. The client requested a lap pool because he swims everyday. And you know we like to add surprises so where there is a traditional house we try to fit things in. In this design, just beyond the chaise in this picture you can see a jacuzzi, which has a retractable nozzle so when the jacuzzi is not in use, the feature becomes a fountain!

Latimer is one of our more recent projects and also one of our favorites. This design, once in the running for a Red Award, seems to have a literal indoor/outdoor pool, with the pool appearing to enter the house under the main stairs. The homeowners can jump right into the pool from the ground floor primary suite. This project is another one of our finest dramatic uses of water and pools in architecture design!

This Yucca Valley project is still in development, but you can see why we are so excited about this particular California architecture project with a pool. We are serious about the wow here at Dean Larkin Design and this design was made to wow, with an infinity pool that drops in a dramatic fall down a front wall. The effect is an incredible view from the street and the pool!
